Jessie went into her office and never emerged all morning except to go to the bathroom once. Carter, darn him, showed up in the foyer, and made sure she came back out. House arrest was really annoying.

“You want to go down to the cafeteria for lunch, Carter?” asked Jessie.

He snorted a laugh at what he obviously thought was a joke. “Call it in, and I’ll grab it at the elevator.”

“No, really, I’m hungry.”

Carter shook his head. “November Golf. That’s a no go. Mark is out in the field for a few hours, and I’m not letting you leave the floor. Call in your order, or I’ll call it in, but you are going nowhere.”

“Great. I’m a prisoner. How about when I want to see Kip?”

“Video conference. Mark has already been there today and explained the setup. When he’s discharged, we are taking him to an undisclosed location with security to wait out this mess.”

Jac and Sharlee walked out of his office with deep frowns. “Hey, where’s Mark?”

“Out,” replied Carter.

“Look, we need to discuss what Sharlee found.” Jac turned to his office manager. “Becky, get Mark on the phone.”

“Hey, but I’m starving,” complained Jessie.

“Me too,” said Sharlee. “I’ll call it in.”

Mark came striding into the office thirty minutes later to the team chowing down on an assortment of Asian cuisine.”

“I hope to hell you saved me some.”

Jessie grinned and held up a plate full of food. “I did.”

He dropped a kiss on her lips and grabbed the plate. “I’m starving.”

They ate until Sharlee was done. “Okay, I’ll start with what I found out.”

“Guess who Renee Warren, aka Jeannette Quan, is?”

“A real accountant?” asked Jessie.

“Yeah, she is actually, but one who works for FinCEN, and speaks Chinese.”

“Who?” asked Carter as he offered his fortune cookie to Becky.

“Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN); it’s part of the Treasury Department.”

Jessie added, “They are the ones who follow money laundering and things. So that is why she was trying to warn me off.”

“Did she?”

“Sorry, I forgot to tell you,” said Mark. He proceeded to fill in the gaps that he had figured out with Jessie’s help.

“So, she’s a fed. Then why don’t they take Richardson down?” asked Carter.

“And I never had a clue she spoke Chinese.”

Sharlee continued, “Yes, she has a Chinese mother and an English father. I did a little more digging, and it looks like she started doing the accounting for Richardson, but as she began to find things that didn’t look right, she reported her concerns and they took her on as an agent of sorts. More like an informant with an extra skillset. Anyway, she is most definitely gathering evidence. She took a risk coming here yesterday, but it might have been a calculated risk. Seems there have been some recent forages into her past by unknown persons.”

Mark added, “Someone must smell a double-cross or something. Yesterday would have helped take the heat off Quan, the agent, if Warren, the accountant, helped them grab Jessie.”

“Then we should tell Renee they are on to her,” said Becky.
